Oh, the excuse of “not having time to eat”

I have consulted with thousands of clients over the years in practice. One of the quickest excuses I hear from clients for not being able to follow their prescribed tailored diet – so often that I believe it’s become a “classic”:

“I do not have time to eat”.

Oh? Please elaborate.

And then comes the onslaught of excuses…

#1: “I don’t have time to go shopping for the right food”

#2: “I don’t have time to prepare/ plan for meals (“Meal Prep”), even though they had the easy option of a meal replacement shake BUT:

“I don’t like meal replacement shakes”

“Meal replacement shakes are not practical, because it is difficult to mix in the car, it gets warm if I pre-prepare it” (or whatever the random objection here is – an objection that certainly took more time to conjure than it would have to make your shake).

#3: Why can’t I have an easy option like quickly popping into an “express grocery store” at a Petrol station?

I’m listening. My responses are ready (I’ve heard this a hundred times). Have you used one of these excuses before? Here’s what I’ll tell you.

Reason 1: “I don’t have time to shop for the food items listed in the eating plan”

Thanks to the pandemic and our fast-paced lives, we now have various online grocery shopping apps available to us. Simple, easy to use, and some apps offer a delivery time of 60min or less from order to doorstep! So, sorry. You do not have an excuse for this one.

Reason 2: “I don’t have time to prepare/ plan for meals (“Meal Prep” is a problem)”, BUT I don’t like the quick option of a meal replacement shake.

This is a very easy one to solve. If you don’t like meal replacement shake, then prepare for meals. And if you don’t have time to prepare meals, then take the meal replacement option. You have one of two options. If you don’t like/or have time for one – simply select the other option. BUT the option of not eating is NOT an option. So, sorry. You do not have an excuse for this one.

Reason 3: Why can’t I have the option to quickly pop into an “express grocery store” at a Petrol station?  Well, because the chances of an express shop at a garage having a meal that’s appropriate for your meal plan are just so low… More likely you will choose a meal that is significantly higher in kilojoules, carbohydrates, and sodium (salt) than the prescribed meal in your diet. Then there is a very, very high risk of grabbing a “forbidden” snack (yes, the innocent chocolate bar) from the shelf leading up to the till (which is obviously strategically placed there to “tempt” us into buying it).

Now you’re grabbing a meal that isn’t fitting into your meal plan, you’re adding a simple chocolate or Coke to the deal, your kilojoule intake increases drastically – a couple of times a week. If it happens one time – cheat and get over it. But that’s never the case here. This brings us right back to: You have the option to prepare a meal, or you have the option of a meal replacement shake. No, you can’t choose this option if you want to lose weight.

What does this excuse boil down to?

The excuse that you don’t have time to eat boils down to one thing: You do not want to lose weight bad enough. Weight loss isn’t your priority (though it keeps the conscience quiet, which is nice). But when it comes to the tough days, are you really willing to sacrifice the habit of skipping meals? Or are you at least willing to try forming new habits to prevent skipping meals?

The fat honest truth is:

You can’t expect to lose weight by doing things the way you did before. Otherwise, you would not have struggled with your weight in the first place.
